Till I read this article, I had an impression that Vanprasthahram starts at 51 years of age. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanaprastha. However, one can start a gradual withdrawal starting 51 years of age. Why?
The only reason, vairag is not easy. Anyone and almost all can get swayed

  2. For interaction between parents and the children, especially through the stages – (1) from 0 to 5 years (2) from 5 to 15 years and (3) after 15 years, there is a सुभाषितम् which says – लालयेत् पञ्च-वर्षाणि दश वर्षाणि ताडयेत् | प्राप्ते तु षोडशे वर्षे पुत्रं मित्रवदाचरेत् ||
    Would you like to review your age-periods 0-2, 3-12, 13-19 in line with above सुभाषितम् ?
    There has also been a concept that व्रतबन्धनम् should be before completing 8 years. So, व्रतबन्धनम्, which is initiating into ब्रह्मचर्याश्रम should be sometime between 5 to 8 years.years

  3. आचार्य विनोबा भावे when commenting on the line “जिजीविषेत् शतं समाः” in ईशावास्योपनिषत् says that active life should be up to 68 years of age. So, वानप्रस्थाश्रम could start after that. He gives reference to teaching by घोर-अङ्गीरस ऋषि to श्रीकृष्ण as quoted in छान्दोग्य ३-१६ that the concept of a century of human life is of 116 years, (that of a century of lemons is the number 120, that of meditation 108, …). Out of 116, first 24 for studies, next 44 (hence up to 68) for dutiful life कर्मयोग, last 48 of deliberation चिन्तन. Vinobaji himself lived up to 99+. I think he followed this scheme !
